Understanding the Process of Manufacturing Natural Gas

Natural gas is one of the fossil fuels in a gaseous state. Methane is counted as one of its largest constituents. Besides coal beds and oil fields, pockets of methane gas are formed. During the processing of natural gas (butane and propane), heavy hydrocarbons are thrown away and hence, they burn without producing much pollution.

This gas is present in gas fields and coal. It can be extracted from coal with the help of technology. This is popularly called “coal gasification”. The process of coal gasification is achieved by exposing coal to high pressures and high temperatures to break it into various gaseous constituents. But it is not practically possible to finance this expensive procedure.

After understanding the concept of natural gas and its extraction, you must also have some idea about its production. The total world output is around 95 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, according to the data provided by the Energy Information Administration. The US and the Gulf countries are counted as the chief producers of natural gas. One-fifth of its production takes place in the US.

Conventional sources like gas and oil fields from which natural gas is produced, have more gas recovery rates as compared to coalfields being non-conventional sources. According to the National Assessment of Oil and Gas fact sheet, conventional sources are responsible for 94% of natural gas production. Two-thirds of the production comes from gas wells, and the rest of it is produced from oil wells.

The manufacturing of natural gas takes place from wells, in land as well as offshore locations such as the Gulf of Mexico. Its production is concentrated in the lower 48 states. The largest producer of gas is Texas and San Juan is the chief-manufacturing field in the US.

The gas production is increased by new drilling technologies and the losses that occur during extraction are anticipated to be at 3% of production. Even pipeline natural gas operations are carried out for extracting the gas below the surface of the earth. Weather conditions like hurricanes obstruct the production and stop it in offshore fields.

This also causes the probable destruction of transmission pipelines. Hurricane Katrina is one such example that caused disruption in natural gas supply. Its supply is hastened by the price decontrol measures at the hands of Federal Energy Regulation Commission.

The total proven reserves in the US are about 200 trillion cubic feet, which in its existing demand pattern, may take at least 10 years to last. Moreover, there are unexplored fields better known as the Alaskan fields.
